At this moment in the 21st century, bodies seem to be astonishingly exploitable, both completely emptied out and yet strangely filled up. There is an undercurrent of complexity, creativity and violence in our contemporary world. Contemporary bodies are simultaneously targets of disciplinary practices (for example, at work), guarantors of individual uniqueness (highlighted through tattooing and other practices of body modification), attractors of pride, shame and other emotional responses, pristine containers of subjectivity and character, vehicles for new political tendencies i.e. forms of illness and health targets of surveillance and data mining, objects for ceaseless and rapacious commercial exploitation (clothing, gyms, make-up, pornography): the body today is all of these things.
