This majestic stone castle and Anglo-Norman fortress was founded in the early thirteenth century in the year 1204. It became the seat of power for the Fitzgeralds, the earls of Kildare, as they emerged as one of the most powerful families in Ireland. At one time Ireland was once ruled from Maynooth Castle in the 1500’s. Garret Mor, the Great Earl of Kildare and Thomas Fitzgerald (Silken Thomas) who once lead a rebellion in 1534 against king Henry VIII once lived here. Maynooth Castle was once the centre of power in Ireland and a place of culture and learning.
