Owen De Forge - Work in Progress Open Studio Talk

In Person

Owen will be opening up his studio to show his work in progress pieces and discuss his process. There will be two sessions. The first begins at 6pm and run for 30 minutes. The second session begins at 6:30pm and ends at 7pm.

“I love the physical task of building my surface before the long, contemplative process of painting on it. This helps me to see the painting as a physical object, an almost but not quite flat sculpture, rather than just an image. Breaking the rectangle presents infinite compositional possibilities, so that every painting becomes undeniably my own subjective response to what we call observed reality. I find truth in this approach. Reality has always been a very subjective experience for me.”

Owen de Forge is a figurative painter based in Dublin, Ireland. Since graduating from Animation at BCFE in 2019 he has dedicated himself full time to painting. His primary stream of work is a series of paintings on hand made non-rectangular constructions, supported by observational studies of figures and landscapes. In 2021 he was shortlisted for the Hennessy Craig Award at the 191st RHA Annual Exhibition. He has featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Ireland, including Twentysomething (Birr Theatre and Arts Centre, 2021), RISING 2021 (Hang Tough Contemporary, Dublin), 139th Annual Exhibition (Royal Ulster Academy of Arts, Belfast, 2020). His work is included in public and private collections such as The OPW Irish State Art Collection, NI Civil Service Art Collection, and Trinity College Dublin’s University Art Collections.

The work being presented here is being the first of a series of “living installations”, as she Letizia describes her visual poetry art environments, devoted to promote social inclusion in the Visual Arts, by bringing photography from a mainly visual experience centered in the use of sight, to the realm of feelings by exploring the depth of all senses, particularly through touch, performance and her visual poetry soundscapes.

The artist’s work has been published and extensively exhibited internationally. Ruth Medjber - Still In Silence

In Person

Studio Ruthless is on the first floor of the Dean Art Studios, at 4 Chatham Row. The studio will be open and welcoming guests (to sit for a portrait or view the sessions) from 5pm–7pm on Culture Night. It is a first come first served opportunity. Each sitter will be provided with a digital copy of their portrait. The portrait may be used by Ruth in a social media, gallery format.

No words may be spoken by either party. If voices are used, the equipment will end and the next sitter will be invited in. Your portrait session may take 2 minutes or 20. It might be cathartic or hilarious, awkward or comforting.

A portrait for me is a bond tying me to another human, formed through communication.

I listen and listen and listen. I try to work out what they’re saying with the words they speak and the ones they don’t. If I have an hour with someone, we would spend the first 40 minutes talking together before taking a single photo.

This is a new experiment, a new experience.
I would like to welcome guests into Studio Ruthless on Culture Night for a new type of portrait session.
You are free to wander in, take a seat, and I’ll begin to adjust the lights, the angles, and thebackdrop.
Neither of us will say a word.
I will pose you and direct you, only as much as is needed. You can smile or be serious.
Neither of us will say a word.
I will capture your likeness, your personality, your character.
All in silence.’

Thais Muniz & Turbante-se: Aw, Look At You Gorgeous!

In Person

Mirroring is a nonverbal technique where a person copies the body language, vocal qualities, or attitude of another. This performance intends to connect people through the materiality of exchanging a scarf, and the gaze, observation, repetition as a mutual language. After exchanging your scarf with the artist, you’re invited to sit in front of her by a dressing table with no mirror, and copy or be copied throughout the self-adornment process with the textile. How can we trust the unknown and share subjective notions of identity, culture, time, and appreciation for the other through the self? Thais Muniz invites participants to come and experiment together at this performance taking place on the ground floor of the Dean Art Studio.
