Join The LAB Gallery this Culture Night for an exciting evening of live music and art. There will be music performed by local musicians in the gallery, running alongside the current exhibition ‘O, To have little house’ by visual artist Michelle Malone.
This first major solo show by recent graduate Michelle Malone looks to consider ideas of embodied identity, social/council housing, including the impact of moving tenants from the city core to the suburbs through sculpture, installation and film. The artist is working to include the personal experience of her grandmother, born in tenements in Dublin City. A particular memory is her grandmother’s use of the staircase as the space for private chats, even when she moved from the tenements to her own house. This context of the staircase was given a new understanding when the artist attended a talk by architect Hugh Campbell when he discussed the history of compartmentalised living versus open plan, in socio economic terms and how that might be revisited because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
